About the album

Violinist Thomas Gould (b. 1983), leader of the Aurora Orchestra and associate leader of the Britten Sinfonia, has established himself as one of Britain’s leading solo violinists. He is as equally at ease playing Bach and Beethoven as he is playing jazz or performing works by the rising young composers featured herein. Mr. Gould joined the swing band Man Overboard in 2011 (their first album All Hands on Deck was a 2013 Champs Hill release). Leading off the album is Bach's Chaconne in D minor, a pinnacle of the violinist’s repertoire; jazz legend Charlie Parker’s ‘Donna Lee’ concludes matters.

Violist Thomas Gould, geboren in 1983, is geneigd om interviewers te vertellen dat er niets uiturzonderlijks is aan zijn talent. Niets is minder waar: Gould begon op driejarige leeftijd al met het studeren en bespelen van zijn complexe maar veelzijdige instrument en in 2005 werd hij, voordat hij afstudeerde, concertmeester bij het Aurora Orchestra.

Inmiddels heeft Gould zich gevestigd als een van de meest toonaangevende Britse soloviolisten. Hij voelt zich net zo op zijn gemak in de muziek van Bach en Beethoven als in de werken van de groeiende jonge componisten op dit album, iets wat zeer toepasselijk is voor een meester van een veelzijdig instrument. Hij is erop gebrand om aan het keurslijf van het genre te ontsnappen en voert klassieke muziek uit op ongebruikelijke locaties zoals de Nonclassical club. Thomas Gould performs as soloist with orchestras worldwide including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra, LA Phil New Music Group, Orchestre Symphonique de Bretagne and West Australian Symphony Orchestra, collaborating with conductors such as John Adams, Nicholas Collon, Paul Daniel and Robin Ticciati. Leader of Aurora Orchestra and associate leader of Britten Sinfonia, Gould appears as soloist and director with both groups and also collaborates regularly with Sinfonietta Riga. Thomas is a guest concertmaster of London Sinfonietta and Mahler Chamber Orchestra, also appearing in the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The dedicatee of Nico Muhly’s concerto for six string electric violin Seeing is Believing, Thomas's recording of this work for Decca Classics received widespread critical acclaim. His other releases on Champs Hill Records include two albums with his swing band Man Overboard Quintet and one with the Artea Quartet. For Harmonia Mundi, Thomas has recorded Bach’s The Goldberg Variations (in Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s transcription) directing Britten Sinfonia. In 2014 he signed a four- album contract with Edition Classics. Thomas is an associate of the Royal Academy of Music where he studied with György Pauk, and a former Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT) winner. He plays a 1782 J.B. Guadagnini violin.
